The Academic Impact Of Congenital Heart Surgeons' Society (CHSS) Studies

Objective:
We reviewed all publications generated by three different CHSS cohorts to estimate the academic impact of these cohorts
Methods:
The CHSS Transposition Study enrolled 891 patients from 24 institutions (1985-1989) and generated 11 PubMed-listed manuscripts.
The CHSS Pulmonary Atresia with Intact Ventricular Septum (PA-IVS) STUDY enrolled 448 patients from 33 institutions (1987-1997) and generated 4 PubMed-listed manuscripts.
The CHSS Critical Left Ventricular Outflow Tract Obstruction (LVOTO) Study enrolled 1241 patients from 29 institutions (2005-2019) and generated 9 PubMed-listed manuscripts.
We queried PubMed to determine the number of publications that referenced the manuscripts generated by these cohorts.
Results:
The 24 manuscripts generated from these 3 cohorts were referenced by a total of 250 references in PubMed-listed manuscripts.
The 11 manuscripts generated from the CHSS Transposition Study were referenced by a total of 111 manuscripts. Median number of references/manuscript=9 (range=0 – 22, mean=10.1).
The 4 manuscripts generated from the CHSS PA-IVS Study were referenced by a total of 81 manuscripts. Median number of references/manuscript=19 (range=7 – 38, mean=20.2).
The 9 manuscripts generated from the CHSS Critical LVOTO Study were referenced by a total of 58 manuscripts. Median number of references/manuscript=5 (range=0 – 22, mean=6.4).
Conclusion:
CHSS studies are widely referenced in the pediatric cardiac surgical literature, with over 10 references per published manuscript. These cohorts provide unique information unavailable in other sources of data.
